چکیده
Abstract In this study, a sand-tank model as physical analog of real-world aquifer is presented for groundwater instruction. The sand tank used introducing flow nets and quantifying flow, modeling calibration via spreadsheet, dye-transport modeling. Students learn from the through interaction visualization, by collecting interpreting data. This integrates theories lectures into laboratories, enhancing students’ skills understanding.

Estimation of contaminant transport parameters for a tropical sand in a sand tank model
This research describes the goals, design and implementation of a quasi natural gradient, laboratory scale, sand tank (aquifer) model experiment. The model was used to study the transport of an inorganic tracer (Chloride) in groundwater, within a tropical aquifer (porous medium) material. Three-dimensional sand tank (1.8 m × 0.3 m × 0.8 m) experiments were conducted to investigate contaminant t...

The Delmarva Peninsula is located on the East Coast of the United States, between the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. Industrial farming in the Delmarva Peninsula leads to levels of nutrients, in particular nitrogen, which grossly exceed natural levels. Excess nitrogen reaches the freshwater streams of the peninsula, which then flows to the Chesapeake Bay. The presence of extreme levels of n...
متن کاملMathematical Model of Unsteady Groundwater Flow Through Aquifers and Calibration Via a Non-Linear Optimization Technique
In this study, the general partial differential equation of unsteady groundwater flow through non-homogeneous and anisotropic aquifer was solved by the fully implicit finite difference method with control volume approach. The calibration of permeability and storage coefficients as model parameters was performed by a transformation technique and application of Powell's non-linear optimization me...
متن کاملA Numerical Simulation of Groundwater Flow and Contaminant Transport on the CRAY T3D and C90 Supercomputers
Numerical simulations of groundwater flow and chemical transport through three-dimensional heterogeneous porous media are described. The authors employ two CRAY supercomputers for different parts of the decoupled calculation: the flow field is computed on the T3D massively parallel computer, and the contaminant migration is simulated on the C90 vector supercomputer. The authors compare simulati...

Nowadays, with the increasing population in Iran, especially in arid and semi-arid areas, as a result of the growing importance of the quality of water resources, including groundwater, field experiments and many simulations have been conducted for the development of groundwater contamination through powerful and up- to- date software. However, in most cases, there is a tangible difference betw...
